Ten years ago, as people everywhere on the planet began to use and be amazed by Google Maps and other web mapping tools, we all became GIS users.

The recent implementation of Web GIS and social computing are creating exciting new opportunities to move beyond our traditional, highly technical application of GIS. We are on the verge of big changes - for who will be engaged by GIS and how it can be used by virtually everyone. We are entering the Human Era of GIS.

This is an important story about where GIS has been and where we are headed. As practitioners, how will we transform our dialog and communications about our work to make GIS more broadly accessible by an ever-expanding community of new users.
