Presenter: Brandon Haydu, Transportation Consultant, Fehr & Peers, Los Angeles, CA
It is an exciting time for GIS professionals as new ways to understand and visualize Big Data develop. Summarizing data is becoming increasingly important to help decision makers make swift, informed choices. Using examples from three projects, Brandon will illustrate a process to automate development of infographics that can be integrated with web mapping to help agencies better understand complex data in their region. Using this process to better understand travel patterns, thousands of visually rich infographics were created with cell phone data, transit ridership information, and a variety of other big data sources. More specifically, Python was used to develop customized charts and histograms with varying styles, and Esri’s Data Driven Pages was modified to style infographics. Esri’s Web App Builder was used to display data and distribute infographics which can be downloaded to supplement grant applications or help local agencies better understand travel patterns in their jurisdiction and compared to the region. This process encourages more informed local planning by providing analytics that would otherwise be costly to create individually.
